3,4,7,8-Tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline acts as a metal-chelating agent for transition metal-catalyzed processes. It is also used in the preparation of heteroleptic cationic iridium(III) complex viz. 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline-bis[2-(2',4'-difluorophenyl)pyridine]iridium(III) hexafluorophosphate. Further, it is employed as a ligand and forms dinuclear copper(II) hypocrellin B complexes. In addition to this, it plays an important role in the formation of tetraaqua(3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline-kappa2N,N')zinc(II) thiosulfate complex.

Es wird auch bei der Vorbereitung des heteroleptischen kationischen Iridium(III)-Komplexes namens 3,4,7,8-Tetramethyl-1,10-Phenanthrolin-bis[2-(2′,4′-Difluorphenyl)Pyridin]Iridium(III)-Hexafluorophosphat verwendet. Außerdem wird es als Ligand eingesetzt und bildet Dinuklear-Kupfer(II)-Hypocrellin-B-Komplexe. Darüber hinaus spielt es eine wichtige Rolle bei der Bildung des Tetraaqua(3,4,7,8-Tetramethyl-1,10-Phenanthrolin-Kappa2N,N′)Zink(II)-Thiosulfat-Komplexes.
