The MPEG1 (Macrophage Expressed Gene 1) gene encodes a protein known as Perforin-2, which is part of the immune system and plays a crucial role in host defense mechanisms. Located on chromosome 11, MPEG1/Perforin-2 is primarily expressed in macrophages, dendritic cells, and other immune cells. The protein functions by forming pores in the membranes of pathogenic bacteria, leading to their lysis and destruction.
