2-Oxazolidinon wird als antimikrobielles Mittel verwendet; bei Organismen dient es als Proteinsynthese-Inhibitoren und richtet sich auf einen frühen Schritt, der die Bindung von N-Formylmethionyl-tRNA an das Ribosom umfasst. Es wird für die chirale Synthese verwendet. Es wird als Ethanolamin-Äquivalent eingesetzt und verhält sich auch wie ein Aziridin-Äquivalent bei der Umwandlung von Thiophenolen oder Aminen in ihre Aminoethylderivate.
