Das Lymphozyten-Separationsmedium wurde ursprünglich für die In-vitro- Isolierung von Lymphozyten aus verdünntem Vollblut entwickelt. Es handelt sich um eine sterilfiltrierte, isoosmotische Polysaccharose- und Diatrizoatlösung mit niedriger Viskosität und einer Dichte von 1,077-1,080 g/cm3 bei 20 °C.
