Dimethyl disulfide is used as an intermediate as well as a food additive in onion, garlic, cheese, meats, soups, savory flavors and fruit flavors. It is used in oil refineries as a sulfiding agent. It is used to alfa substitute 2-methylfuran-acrolein to produce food stuff. It is involved in the preparation of 4-(methylthio)phenol. Further, it is used to replace methyl mercaptan as a jet fuel additive. It finds application in artificial flavoring agent and a corrosion inhibitor. In addition to this, it serves as an effective soil fumigant in agriculture.

Anwendungen
Dimethyldisulfid wird als Zwischen- und Lebensmittelzusatzstoff in Zwiebeln, Knoblauch, Käse, Fleisch, Suppen, herzhaften Aromen und Fruchtaromen verwendet. Es wird in Ölraffinerien als Sulfidierungsmittel eingesetzt. Es wird in der Lebensmittelproduktion bei der Alpha-Substitution von 2-Methylfuran-Acrolein verwendet. Es ist an der Herstellung von 4-(Methylthio)phenol beteiligt. Darüber hinaus wird es verwendet, um Methylmercaptan als Kerosinzusatzstoff zu ersetzen. Es findet Anwendung in künstlichen Aromastoffen und als Korrosionshemmer. Darüber hinaus dient es als wirkungsvolles Bodenbegasungsmittel in der Landwirtschaft.

Löslichkeit
Mischbar mit Ethanol, Ethyläther, Alkohol, den meisten organischen Lösungsmitteln und Ölen. Leicht mit Wasser mischbar.

Hinweise
Nicht kompatibel mit starken Basen, starken Oxidationsmitteln und starken Reduktionsmitteln.
