Dimethyl sulfone is used as a high-temperature solvent for both inorganic and organic substances. It acts as an intermediate as well as medium in organic synthesis. It plays an important role as a carbon source by the airborne bacteria Afipia. It is also employed as an extraction solvent for the separation of aromatic compounds like benzene, toluene and xylenes from aliphatic hydrocarbons. Further, it is used in the polymerization process. It finds application in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, paint and coating materials.

Anwendungen
Dimethylsulfon wird als Hochtemperatur-Lösungsmittel für anorganische und organische Substanzen verwendet. Wirkt als Zwischenmedium und Medium in der organischen Synthese. Spielt eine wichtige Rolle als Kohlenstoffquelle durch die in der Luft befindlichen Bakterien Afipia. Wird auch als Extraktionslösungsmittel zur Trennung aromatischer Verbindungen wie Benzol, Toluol und Xylene von aliphatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen eingesetzt. Wird darüber hinaus im Polymerisationsprozess eingesetzt. Findet Anwendung in Pharmazeutika, Agrochemikalien, Farben und Beschichtungsmaterialien.

Löslich in Wasser, Methanol, Ethanol und Aceton.

Hinweise
Hygroskopisch. Nicht kompatibel mit starken Oxidationsmitteln.
