Glyoxal is used to prepare 4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone by condensation with urea. It finds application in leather tanning process, textile finishes and paper coatings. It is an important building block in the synthesis of imidazoles. It acts as a solubilizer and cross-linking agent in polymer chemistry. Further, it is used as a fixative for histology to preserve cells in order to examine under a microscope.

Anwendungen
Glyoxal wird zur Vorbereitung von 4,5-Dihydroxy-2-Imidazolidinon durch Kondensation mit Harnstoff verwendet. Findet Anwendung in Ledergerbungs-, Textilveredelungs- und Papierbeschichtungsprozessen. Ist ein wichtiger Baustein bei der Synthese von Imidazolen. Fungiert als Lösungs- und Vernetzungsmittel in der Polymerchemie. Wird darüber hinaus als Fixiermittel für die Histologie verwendet, um Zellen zu konservieren, damit sie unter einem Mikroskop untersucht werden können.

Mischbar mit Wasser, Methanol und Dimethylsulfoxid.

Hinweise
Feuchtigkeits- und hitzeempfindlich. Nicht kompatibel mit starken Oxidationsmitteln, starkem Reduktionsmittel, Sauerstoff, Peroxiden, Amiden, Aminen, hydroxyhaltigen Materialien, Salpetersäure und Aldehyden.
