Description
Lysosomes are membrane-bound vacuoles which play a critical role in cellular metabolism. These organelles participate in endocytosis, the synthesis and assembly of acid hydrolases, act as sites for digestion of foreign materials and for specialized autolytic cellular processes. Membrane-associated glycoproteins have an important role in normal lysosomal function. Lamp1, also known as lysosome associated membrane protein 1, is a heavily glycosylated membrane protein of the lysosome. It contains a putative signal peptide, 18 sites for N-linked glycosylation, a single membrane-spanning segment and a short (11 amino acid) cytosolic tail.
