Methyl red is an indicator dye that turns red in acidic solutions. It is a pH indicator, turning red under pH 4.4, yellow over pH 6.2, and orange in between those values. It is used in microbiology in the Voges-Proskauer test to identify bacteria that produce stable acids through mixed acid fermentation of glucose. Methyl-red positive bacteria include Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli. Methyl-red negative bacteria include Enterobacter aerogenes and Serratia marcescens.

Anwendungen
Methylrot ist ein Indikatorfarbstoff, der in sauren Lösungen rot wird. Es ist ein pH-Indikator, der unter dem pH-Wert 4.4 rot, über 6.2 gelb und dazwischen orange wird. Wird in der Mikrobiologie im Voges-Proskauer-Test verwendet, um Bakterien zu identifizieren, die durch die Mischsäuregärung von Glucose stabile Säuren produzieren. Zu den methylroten positiven Bakterien gehören Proteus vulgaris und Escherichia coli. Zu den methylroten negativen Bakterien gehören Enterobacter aerogenes und Serratia marcescens.

Löslichkeit
Löslich in Wasser (800 mg/ml bei 25 °C) und schwer löslich in Ethanol (25 °C).

Hinweise
Bei Raumtemperatur lagern. Reaktiv mit Oxidationsmitteln.
