Propionaldehyde applications include as an intermediate, in pharmaceuticals, perfumes, plastics and polyols or polyhydric alcohols. It is also used as a precursor to trimethylolethane (CH3C(CH2OH)3) through a condensation reaction with formaldehyde, this triol is an important intermediate in the production of alkyd resins. Other applications include reduction to propanol and oxidation to propionic acid. Also used in PEGylated protein purification.

Anwendungen
Propionaldehyd-Anwendungen umfassen als Zwischenprodukt Pharmazeutika, Parfums, Kunststoffe und Polyole oder polyhydrische Alkohole. Es wird auch als Vorstufe zu Trimethylolethan (CH3C(CH2OH)3) durch eine Kondensationsreaktion mit Formaldehyd verwendet; dieses Triol ist ein wichtiges Zwischenprodukt bei der Herstellung von Alkydharzen. Weitere Anwendungen sind die Reduktion auf Propanol und die Oxidation zu Propionsäure. Wird auch bei der PEGylierten Proteinaufreinigung verwendet.

Löslichkeit
Vollständig mit Wasser mischbar.

Hinweise
Luftempfindlich. Nicht kompatibel mit Oxidationsmitteln und Wärme.
