ζ-globin is an α-like hemoglobin. The ζ-globin polypeptide is synthesized in the yolk sac of the early embryo, while α-globin is produced throughout fetal and adult like. The ζ-globin gene is a member of the human α-globin gene cluster that includes five functional genes and two pseudogenes. The order of genes is: 5′ - ζ - pseudoζ - μ - pseudoα-1 - α-2 -α-1 - θ1 - 3′.
